Andrew Sterling

Full name and Birthday?
Andrew John Sterling, 1st January 1991
When did you first come to our church?
I’ve been here all my life so I can’t really remember that!
Favourite TV shows?
Where do I start, I’m a big fan of Scrubs and a lot of other comedy stuff. I really enjoy watching Wimbledon at the minute (Come on Murray!).
Hobbies/Interests?
Interested in music, both listening to it and playing it and enjoy playing a bit of squash. I’ve also started running and hoping to be up to my Dad’s standards very soon.
(Hmmm... it’s his Dad who’s putting Happenings together. He’ll have to be quick to catch me! And why doesn’t his girlfriend Amy get a mention in this interview? Amy is a lovely lass from Doncaster who is studying fine art at Lancaster University. They met at Cliff College in Derbyshire during Andrew’s first year of study.)
What do you like to read?
I like to read theology books, which sounds really geeky. I’m not much of a reader but I’m often reading blogs and stuff on BBC News on the internet.
Favourite book of the Bible?
I like reading the Old Testament prophets because there is so much depth and important lessons that God speaks into those cultures and many things that can be applied to us today. I also love Acts and the gigantic challenge it presents.
It changes all the time, but at the moment I like Mumford and Sons. It’s led by a guy who was a Christian in a very public Christian family but has lost his faith In God and Church. I think their album ‘Sigh No More’ is important for the Church to listen to and understand that we should be a people that provides healing instead of hurt.
Favourite worship songs?
May the words of my mouth. It really speaks of the practical response of our love for God and reminds me of the sacrifice that I am called to make every day and the personal relationship with Jesus that supports me and guides me and constantly pushes me to live my life to the full.
Who inspires you?
John Wesley and George Whitfield are currently high on the list. I tend to be inspired by ‘secular saints’ at the moment. People who don’t know Jesus but show elements of God’s love in this world makes me think about my response to injustice as a Christian.
Things you like to visit or achieve?
Would love to go to a Formula 1 race weekend and would really appreciate a job once I finish at Cliff College next year.
Anything you would like to add?
I would like to thank the Church in the way that it has supported me over the years. My prayer is that everyone who walks through the door of our Church will also be encouraged to be the best version of the person God has created them to be.
Tom says: Normally, ‘Steve says’ in this bit but he’s predisposed with his house move. Also, there’s not a lot of space but I can tell you (if you didn’t know already) that Andrew blesses his mam and dad big time. We know for sure that the Lord has plans for him.
